Melanie possesses a highly regarded skill and reputation for catching both the atmosphere of an equestrian sporting event, and the character, lines and conformation of a horse. Racing, polo, dressage and eventing all offer the artist a fabulous theatre for observation, and the thrill of depicting these equine athletes in action. She is equally absorbed when sketching the rhythm of an informal group of horses as they graze in the fields at leisure, or racehorses as they fly up the gallops on morning exercise. The connection made and the handling of horse and paint that is involved in equine portraiture, is both fascinating and a joy, resulting in a remarkable likeness in her equine head portraits, with an emphasis on the individual spirit.
Her past experience of riding and handling horses, and an academic training in painting is evident, in excellent drawing skills and expressive, mark making and brushstrokes. In charcoal, pastels, watercolour or oils, she catches brilliantly, the fleeting vitality of movement and expression, and with an understanding of that unique connection between horse and rider.
Her painting practice includes Exhibitions, Artist Residencies (Newmarket and Oxfordshire) and painting to commission.
